Garnerin descending in his parachute, Paris
Garnerin descending in his parachute, with his discarded balloon on the left. Claimed to be the first to descend from a balloon by means of a parachute. Although parachutes had for a long time been used for the purpose of sending down cats and dogs from balloons to amuse the crowds, it was not until this date that Garnerin cut himself away from his hydrogen balloon (seen on the left) over Paris at 3, 000 feet, and descended safely.

EDITORS COMMENTS
On October 22, 1797, French aeronaut Jean-Pierre Blanchard's protégé, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier's successor, and pioneering aviator André-Jacques Garnerin (1769-1823) made history by becoming the first person to descend safely from a hot air balloon using a parachute. In this iconic image, Garnerin is seen gracefully descending under his paraglide, or parachute, with his discarded hydrogen balloon on the left. Although parachutes had been used for centuries to send animals from balloons as entertainment, Garnerin's daring experiment marked a significant milestone in human flight. At an altitude of approximately 3,000 feet above Paris, Garnerin courageously cut himself free from the balloon and plunged into the unknown. As he descended, he waved a large French flag to signal his success to the crowds below. The image captures the moment of his landing, with Garnerin standing triumphantly on the ground, having descended safely from the sky. This pioneering achievement paved the way for further advancements in aviation and transportation, cementing Garnerin's place in history as a celebrated pioneer of the early aeronautical age.
