EDITORS COMMENTS
Bluebird Moored at Bathurst: An Historic Aviation Moment in 1931 This evocative photograph captures the moment when the Blackburn Bluebird IV, registration G-ABGF, came to rest at Bathurst, the capital city of The Gambia, West Africa, on 1 March 1931. The intrepid aviators, Miss Delphine Reynolds and her pilot, W.G. Pudney, had embarked on a daring survey flight from Hanworth, England, with the goal of reaching Bathurst via Tangier. Bluebird IV, a two-seat biplane, was a Blackburn Rippon Mk.IIA, modified for long-range, high-altitude flight. The aircraft was equipped with additional fuel tanks, allowing it to cover vast distances over the Atlantic Ocean. However, the arduous journey took its toll on the metal airframe, which had corroded beyond repair after two and a half months in Sierra Leone. Upon arrival in Bathurst, the Bluebird underwent an urgent modification. Short floats were fitted, enabling the plane to take off and land on water, making it possible for the team to continue their journey. The successful adaptation of the aircraft to amphibious capabilities was a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the aviation pioneers of the era. Miss Reynolds and Mr. Pudney's historic flight marked an important milestone in the exploration and transportation history of West Africa. Their courage and determination paved the way for future aviation achievements and expanded the horizons of what was considered possible in the realm of long-distance aviation.
