EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative black-and-white photograph captures a significant moment in British royal history: the christening of Princess Elizabeth, who would later become Queen Elizabeth II. Taken on May 29, 1926, the image shows a gathering of the Royal Family in the White Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace. The Duke of Connaught, the third son of Queen Victoria, stands at the far left of the group, dressed in full military uniform. King George V, wearing the Order of the Garter, is seen in the center, holding his granddaughter, Princess Elizabeth, for the ceremony. The Duke of York, later King George VI, stands to the King's right, and the Earl of Strathmore, the Duke of York's brother, is positioned to his left. Seated in the front row, Queen Mary, the Queen Consort, is pictured with a proud smile as she cradles her granddaughter, Princess Mary, in her arms. The Duchess of York, Elizabeth's mother, is seated next to Queen Mary, and Lady Elphinstone, a close friend of the family, is seen at the far right of the group. The christening of Princess Elizabeth was an important event in the history of the British monarchy, marking the beginning of a reign that would span over seven decades. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the intimate moments of the Royal Family during this significant occasion.
