EDITORS COMMENTS
Salle de conferences: Experimental Conferences on Flight by Camille Vert (1859-1870) This intriguing broadside announces a series of experimental conferences on flight, featuring the groundbreaking work of engineer Camille Vert from the Drome region. The image at the top of the poster showcases two of Vert's innovative flight designs: a lighter-than-air airship inspired by the flying fish, and a heavier-than-air ornithopter with a winged man. The flying fish airship, depicted on the left, represents Vert's vision of creating lighter-than-air flight. This design, which resembles a fish in motion, was inspired by the natural ability of the flying fish to glide through the air by flapping its tail and wings. Vert's airship was designed to mimic this motion, using hydrogen gas for lift and a tail propeller for directional control. On the right, the ornithopter with a winged man illustrates Vert's exploration of heavier-than-air flight. This design, which predates the Wright Brothers' famous Wright Flyer by several decades, features a man with wings strapped to his arms and legs, mimicking the flapping motion of a bird's wings. Vert believed that by replicating the natural flight of birds, humans could take to the skies. These experimental conferences on flight by Camille Vert were likely held in the late 19th century, a time when aviation was still in its infancy. Vert's groundbreaking designs, which combined elements of both lighter-than-air and heavier-than-air flight, showcased his innovative thinking and his commitment to pushing the boundaries of what was possible in the realm of aeronautics.
