The Shaftesbury Home was a charitable institution that provided shelter and care for destitute women and children. In this scene, a group of young girls are seen hard at work in the laundry, washing and mangling clothes. The laundry room is filled with large tubs of soapy water, wringers, and mangles, all essential tools for cleaning and preparing the clothes for drying.
