EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir William Dugdale (1605-1686), a prominent antiquary, herald, and author of significant works on ecclesiastical architecture, is depicted in this portrait taken when he was around fifty years old. Dugdale, who served as Garter-King-of-Arms, was a dedicated scholar and historian, whose passion for uncovering the past left an indelible mark on the study of English history. Born in Warwickshire, England, Dugdale's interest in heraldry and antiquities began at an early age. He became a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in London in 1636 and was later appointed Garter-King-of-Arms in 1639. Throughout his career, Dugdale authored numerous important works, including "Monasticon Anglicanum" (1655), a comprehensive record of the history and architecture of English monasteries and convents, and "The Antiquities of Warwickshire" (1656), a detailed account of the history and antiquities of his native county. This portrait captures Dugdale at the height of his career, with a thoughtful expression and a quill pen in hand, ready to record the historical details that would later become the foundation of his groundbreaking works. The autograph beneath the image, penned by Dugdale himself, adds an intriguing personal touch to this remarkable photograph, making it a treasured piece of historical art and a testament to the enduring legacy of this remarkable antiquary.
