EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Frederic Cuvier's "Dictionnaire de Sciences Naturelles: Ornithologie" published by F.G. Levrault in Paris between 1816 and 1830, showcases two intriguing bird species native to the Americas: the Smooth-billed Ani (Crotophaga ani) and the Amazonian White-tailed Trogon (Trogon viridis). The illustration, painted by Jean Gabriel Pretre, a renowned painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History, and engraved by David under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, captures the birds in remarkable detail. The Smooth-billed Ani, depicted on the left, is a large, black-and-white bird with a distinctive, flat, smooth bill. This bird is native to Central and South America, and is known for its omnivorous diet and unique foraging behavior. The Amazonian White-tailed Trogon, on the right, is a vibrant, colorful bird with a green back, blue-green breast, and a white tail. This species is native to the Amazon Basin and is a popular target for birdwatchers due to its striking appearance and melodic song. This illustration is a testament to the exceptional artistry and scientific accuracy of the time, providing a glimpse into the natural world of over two centuries ago. The intricate stipple engraving technique used to create the image adds to its beauty and detail, making it a valuable addition to any collection of historical ornithological works.
