EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the solemnity and history of the grave of former South African President Paul Kruger, located in the heart of Pretoria. Dated to the 1910s, the image showcases the simple yet dignified grave site, adorned with a bust of Kruger and surrounded by a lone cypress tree. Kruger, born in 1825, was a significant figure in South African history, serving as the last President of the South African Republic, also known as the Transvaal Republic, from 1883 to 1900. He led the resistance against British encroachment on Transvaal territory during the Second Boer War, which ended with the signing of the Treaty of Vereeniging in 1902. Following his surrender, Kruger was exiled to Europe, where he died in 1904. His remains were later returned to South Africa and interred in this quiet corner of the Pretoria cemetery. The grave serves as a poignant reminder of the complex and tumultuous history of South Africa and the enduring legacy of its leaders.
