The Dutch apothecary and naturalist, Albertus Seba, meticulously curated an extensive collection of naturalia, or natural curiosities, which were later illustrated in his Thesaurus. This particular print highlights the unique defensive mechanism of the pufferfish, a member of the Tetraodontidae family, also known as the puffer or balloonfish. When threatened, the pufferfish inflates its body by gulping in water or air, becoming bloated and spherical in shape, making it difficult for predators to swallow. The pufferfish's eyes also become larger, making it appear even more intimidating. This inflated appearance is not only a deterrent but also serves as a warning signal to other marine life of the fish's toxicity. The Sphoeroides sp. pufferfish is a bony fish, belonging to the Actinopterygii class and Ray-finned fish order.
