SS Berengaria leaving Southampton for Jarrow, 1938

Photograph of the Cunard Liner Berengaria heading out of Southampton, with tugs, to head to Jarrow to be broken up, December 1938. Berengaria was built at the AG Vulcan shipyard, Hamburg, in 1913 and launched as Imperator for the Hamburg-Amerika Line. She was laid up, unused, during the First World War then given to Britain as war reparations at the ceasation of violence. Cunard bought her shortly thereafter and used her on the Southampton, Cherbourg, New York route from 1921 until 1938. Unfortunately she lost her Passenger Certificate in 1938 due to the senility of her electrical wiring and was taken to Jarrow to be broken up in the same year

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment of the SS Berengaria leaving Southampton for Jarrow in December 1938. The Cunard Liner, originally built as Imperator for the Hamburg-Amerika Line at the AG Vulcan shipyard in Hamburg in 1913, had a tumultuous history during World War I before being given to Britain as war reparations. Acquired by Cunard shortly thereafter, she served faithfully on the Southampton, Cherbourg, New York route from 1921 until her unfortunate fate in 1938. Due to the senility of her electrical wiring, Berengaria lost her Passenger Certificate and was deemed unfit for further service. As a result, she was towed out of Southampton with tugs en route to Jarrow where she would be broken up later that same year. This photograph is not just a visual record of a ship's final journey but also a poignant reminder of an era gone by. The image captures both the grandeur and sadness surrounding this once majestic vessel as she heads towards her ultimate demise. It serves as an important historical document showcasing the rise and fall of one of maritime history's most iconic ships.
