EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image from the annals of English history, a solemn procession of monks makes its way through the countryside, bearing the precious relics of Saint Cuthbert. The year is 999, and the monks are transporting the remains of the venerated saint from the remote island of Lindisfarne to Durham, where they would be enshrined in a new cathedral dedicated to his memory. Saint Cuthbert (635-687), a Northumbrian bishop and hermit, was renowned for his piety and miraculous powers. His life was marked by a deep connection to nature, and he was said to have lived as a hermit on the uninhabited Farne Islands off the coast of Northumberland. Cuthbert's reputation for holiness spread far and wide, and he was eventually elected bishop of Lindisfarne in 684. However, in 875, the Viking raids on Lindisfarne forced the monks to flee with the relics of their beloved saint. They took refuge in Chester-le-Street, where they remained for over 200 years. In the late 10th century, under the auspices of Bishop Aldhun, the monks set out on a pilgrimage to bring the relics back to their rightful place. The image captures the monks in the midst of their journey, with the towering Durham Cathedral looming in the distance. The procession is led by a monk carrying the cross, followed by the ornate reliquary containing the saint's remains. The monks walk beneath the branches of a tree, its leaves rustling in the wind, as if offering a blessing to the solemn procession. The scene is filled with a sense of reverence and awe, as the monks bring the sacred relics closer to their new home. This photograph, taken from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a glimpse into the rich history of Saint Cuthbert and the deep devotion of the monks who cared for his relics. It is a reminder of the enduring power of faith and the importance of preserving the past for future generations.
