This evocative image depicts Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, driving the snakes out of the emerald isle as legend has it. Dressed in his traditional robes and adorned with a mitre atop his head, Saint Patrick raises his hand in a gesture of blessing and authority. Saint Patrick, born in Britain around 385 AD, is said to have spent six years as a shepherd in County Antrim before being captured by Irish raiders and taken as a slave to Ireland. He is believed to have spent the next six years in captivity, during which time he learned the Irish language and the customs of the people. He escaped back to Britain but returned to Ireland as a bishop in 432 AD, where he spent the rest of his life spreading Christianity. The legend of Saint Patrick driving the snakes out of Ireland is a metaphor for his role in banishing paganism from the land. While there is no scientific evidence to support the existence of snakes in Ireland during Saint Patrick's time, the story has become an enduring symbol of his mission to bring Christianity to the Irish people.
