EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Lady Constance Lytton, a prominent Suffragette and activist for women's rights, delivering a speech at a garden party hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Terrero at their residence, Rockstone House, in Pinner, Middlesex, England, on the 4th of July, 1911. The event was organized by the local branch of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), which Janie Terrero, the wife of the homeowner, had established in 1911. Lady Constance Lytton, dressed in a stylish hat and coat, sits in front of the WSPU Pinner banner, with an attentive audience gathered around her. The garden party setting, filled with lush greenery and colorful flowers, adds a serene and picturesque backdrop to the significant event. Mr. Terrero presided over the gathering, lending his support to the cause. The WSPU was a militant organization that employed various tactics, including protests, marches, and hunger strikes, to fight for women's suffrage and the right to vote. Lady Constance Lytton, a member of the aristocracy, was an influential figure in the movement, using her social status to bring attention to the cause. Her presence at this garden party in Pinner underscores the widespread support for women's suffrage and the determination of activists to secure the vote for women.
