Originally published in Richards New Edition of the Complete Works of Comte de Buffon by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1837, this exquisite artwork offers a glimpse into the natural world of the past. The Sunbittern, with its striking plumage and unique posture, is the largest of the three birds depicted. Its body is adorned with a mix of black, white, and chestnut feathers, while its wings are covered in iridescent green and blue feathers that resemble the scales of a fish. The Sunbittern is native to Central and South America and is known for its ability to stand motionless in the sun with its wings spread out, resembling a small, flat-bottomed boat.
