EDITORS COMMENTS
A Delightful Discovery: Swiss Pine and Stone Pine - A Botanical Journey through Time. This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, offers a fascinating glimpse into the natural world of Swiss Pine, Pinus cembra, and Stone Pine, Pinus pinea. The engraving showcases intricate details of the trees' branches, cones, and nuts, inviting us to explore the unique characteristics of each. In the foreground, the Swiss Pine or Arolla Pine, Pinus cembra, is depicted with a graceful branch adorned with tiny, delicate flowers (a). The cones (b) of this majestic fir tree are arranged in clusters, each cone containing small, edible seeds. The engraving also reveals the distinctive, small, brown nuts (c) that are nestled within the cones. In the background, the Stone Pine, Pinus pinea, is illustrated with a branch bearing its distinctive, large cones (a). Unlike the Swiss Pine, the cones of the Stone Pine do not open to release their seeds, instead, they remain closed and protected by a hard, woody shell. The nuts (c) of the Stone Pine, also known as pine nuts, are a popular food source and are still enjoyed today. This beautiful botanical illustration not only showcases the striking differences between these two pines but also offers a captivating window into the natural history of the 18th century. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the handcolored copperplate engraving transport us back in time, allowing us to appreciate the beauty and wonder of these trees as they were discovered and documented over two centuries ago.
