Hoccleve's literary prowess earned him the patronage of King Henry V, who appointed him as a clerk of the king's works in 1413. The astronomical aspect of Hoccleve's legacy is equally impressive. He was a skilled mathematician and astronomer, and his work on the motion of the planets and the calculation of the solar and lunar eclipses was groundbreaking for the time. In 1432, Hoccleve was granted a royal charter to establish the New Foundation at Queens College, Oxford.
