EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial view photograph captures the distinctive silhouette of an early Metropolitan Police woman's helmet, a key component of the Stanley Uniform introduced in 1919. The Metropolitan Police Force, commonly known as the Met, took a significant step towards gender equality in law enforcement with the adoption of this uniform for its Women Police Constables (WPCs). The helmet, made primarily of cork and hard felt, was designed to protect the heads of female officers during their duties. The large badge on the front, with its distinctive ruler-like design, served as a symbol of authority and identification. The Stanley Uniform, named after its designer, Inspector Walter Stanley, was a significant departure from the traditional male police uniform. The helmet's black color and brimless design were intended to distinguish the female officers from their male counterparts. The helmet's size and shape were also designed to accommodate the hairstyles of the time, allowing women to wear their hair up under the helmet. The 1920s marked a period of transition for women in law enforcement, as they began to take on more active roles in the force. This photograph offers a glimpse into the history of women in the Metropolitan Police Force, showcasing their commitment and dedication to their service. The Stanley Uniform, with its distinctive helmet, remains an iconic symbol of this era and the progress towards gender equality in law enforcement.
