EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment when Queen Victoria received a unique and exotic gift from King Menelik II of Abyssinia (now Ethiopia) at Marlborough House in London on March 27, 1893. The gift, a live zebra, was presented to the Queen by the Ethiopian monarch during his visit to England. The zebra, an Abyssinian or Grévy's zebra, was shipped from Africa and was the first of its kind to be exhibited in Europe. The zebra was later transferred to the Royal Zoological Gardens in Regent's Park, London, where it became the centerpiece of the newly built New Zebra House. The enclosure was specifically designed to accommodate the large and powerful animal, and it quickly became a popular attraction for visitors to the zoo. The presentation of the zebra to Queen Victoria was an important moment in the history of the Royal Zoological Gardens and marked the beginning of a long tradition of importing exotic animals from around the world. The image shows the keeper holding the leash of the zebra, which is being led towards its new home in the enclosure. The photograph provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the world of international diplomacy and the exchange of exotic gifts between monarchs and their subjects. The zebra's journey from Ethiopia to London was a long and arduous one, involving months of preparation and the expertise of skilled animal handlers. The animal's arrival in Europe marked the beginning of a new era in the study and conservation of zebras and other exotic animals, and its legacy continues to inspire and captivate visitors to the Royal Zoological Gardens to this day.
