EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lantern slide depicts the breathtaking Pungwe Falls in Zimbabwe, then known as Rhodesia, during the late 1890s. The Pungwe River, named Rio Pungwe in Portuguese, is a 400 km long waterway that originates beneath Mount Nyangani in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe. The river then flows eastward through Mozambique's Manica and Sofala provinces before emptying into the Mozambique Channel in Beira, forming a vast estuary. The Pungwe River is one of the major rivers in Mozambique and is renowned for causing frequent floods. The falls, shown in this image, are a testament to the river's power and beauty. The image captures the misty veil of the water cascading down the rocks, creating a mesmerizing scene. The serene surroundings, with lush greenery and a clear blue sky, add to the tranquility of the image. This lantern slide is part of the Boswell Collection, Box 288, British South Africa, and dates back to the late 19th century. It offers a unique glimpse into the past, providing a window into the natural beauty of Zimbabwe and Mozambique during a time when European exploration and colonization were shaping the region's history.
