Animal: Unusual: Cute: Lion cub at Public House. Regulars at a quiet country pub in remotest North Wales face an unusual challenge at closing time. For the pub, the lion Inn, at Gwytherin, Denbighshire rings a bell at " Drinking up" time, - and the bell advances down the bar counter clutched firmly in the teeth of Sheba, a real life lioness. Sheba is the unusual pet of the Inns licenses Bob Hughes. After a succession of pets - ranging from badgers to budgies, Bob, 42, his wife Anna, 29 and their children Victoria, 7, and Brian, 6, decided they should have a pet more inn-keeping - namely a lion! However, this presented certain problems, so the Hughes family finally acquired Sheba, a nine week old lioness, at a cost of £ 300, from a Lancashire zoo supplier. Sheba has settled down well with the familys two Labradors, Bruce and Lady, as well as the Lion Inns customers. Commented Bob: " The locals are all thrilled with Sheba, but I fancy the farmers will be counting their sheep more often - although Sheba only eats beef!" Sheba, who was born in an English national park, lives mainly on baby food and a pound of beef a day. But after a year her diet will increase to a somewhat costly fifteen pounds of beef daily. An Unusual Closing Time Tradition - Lion Cub Rings the Bell at North Wales Pub
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In a quiet country pub nestled in the remote corners of North Wales, regulars face an extraordinary challenge when closing time approaches. The Lion Inn, located in Gwytherin, Denbighshire, has a unique way of signaling "Drinking up" time - with the help of Sheba, an adorable lion cub. Clutching a bell firmly between her teeth, Sheba advances down the bar counter to announce that it's time for patrons to finish their drinks. Sheba is not your typical pet; she belongs to Bob Hughes, the inn's owner and licensee. With a history of keeping various animals as pets - from badgers to budgies - Bob and his family decided it was only fitting to have a more inn-keeping companion: a lion! After some careful consideration and searching, they welcomed nine-week-old Sheba into their lives at a cost of £300. Since then, Sheba has become part of the family alongside two Labradors named Bruce and Lady. Not only does she charm customers with her presence but also brings delight to locals who visit regularly. However, farmers may need to keep an extra eye on their sheep as Sheba prefers beef over any other meal. Born in an English national park, this cute lioness currently enjoys baby food along with one pound of beef each day. As she grows older though, her appetite will increase significantly - costing fifteen pounds worth of beef daily! (October 1972)
