EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a young Geoffrey de Havilland, the visionary aircraft designer, striking a pose in front of his remarkable creation. Born in 1882, de Havilland's passion for aviation and building aeroplanes was evident from an early age. In 1920, he established the renowned de Havilland Aircraft Company Ltd. , where he also served as the technical director. Throughout his illustrious career, de Havilland achieved numerous triumphs that forever shaped the world of aviation. One of his most iconic achievements was the groundbreaking Comet - not to be confused with its later commercial counterpart - which became the first jet airliner to enter commercial service. The name "Comet" originated from another extraordinary creation by de Havilland: a racing plane that emerged victorious in the prestigious London to Melbourne MacRobertson race back in 1934. Additionally, during World War II, de Havilland's genius gave birth to yet another legendary aircraft known as the "Mosquito". This lightweight bomber played a pivotal role in combat operations and left an indelible mark on military history. The photograph showcases Geoffrey de Havilland at a formative stage of his career when his innovative spirit and determination were just beginning to take flight. It serves as a testament to his unwavering commitment towards pushing boundaries and revolutionizing aviation technology for generations to come.
