Wakey Wakey, Mothers Home. While the cats away the mice will play, so the old saying goes

Wakey Wakey, Mothers Home. While the cats away the mice will play, so the old saying goes. And as if to prove that naughty boys cannot be left alone with the housekeeping money for five minutes at a time, Mrs Thatcher flew back from the Falklands to find the City in a panic, money pouring out of the country and senior ministers queuing up to get smacked down.
The recent disastrous run on Sterling began while the Prime Minister was in the Falklands. Rumours of an early election and the threat of a 30% develuation under a possible Labour Government made overseas investors sprint for cover.
Perhaps that is why the City of London seems dead. Or is it the prime ministers vision of a bowler hatted Britain if the Conservatives lose at the polls. It could just be the aftermath of New Year celebrations when the world seems flat and drowsy.
In fact these city gents are actors, invited to lie down by the Manpower Services Commission. Its all part of an advertising plan to get the nation back on its feet again. 3rd January 1983

Wakey Wakey, Mother's Home - A Snapshot of Chaos and Contemplation

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This intriguing print captures a moment in history when the old saying "While the cats away the mice will play" seemed to come alive. As Mrs Thatcher returned from her Falklands trip, she found herself facing a City in disarray and senior ministers anxiously awaiting their turn for reprimand. The recent turmoil surrounding Sterling began during the Prime Minister's absence, as rumors of an early election and potential devaluation sent foreign investors into a frenzy. The aftermath of New Year celebrations may have contributed to the general lethargy that seemed to engulf London's financial hub. However, upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that these seemingly idle city gents are not what they appear to be. In fact, they are actors commissioned by the Manpower Services Commission as part of an advertising campaign aimed at revitalizing the nation. Their symbolic act of lying down represents a call for action and unity. This thought-provoking image serves as a reminder that even amidst chaos and uncertainty, there is always room for hope and rejuvenation. It encapsulates both the challenges faced by Britain at that time and its resilience in finding creative solutions to rebuild itself. Taken on January 3rd, 1983, this photograph offers us a glimpse into an era marked by political turbulence but also hints at brighter days ahead if collective efforts are made towards progress.
