EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the bustling streets of Glasgow, Scotland on a crisp autumn day in 1938. Standing tall and proud is the iconic Argyle Picture House, located at 55 Argyle Street. This beloved cinema was a hub of entertainment for locals and visitors alike during its heyday. Rebuilt and reopened just weeks before this snapshot was taken, the Argyle Picture House had undergone a transformation under the skilled hands of architect George Boswell. With an impressive seating capacity of 1,250, it promised endless hours of cinematic delight to all who entered its doors. The image captures not only the grandeur of the building itself but also offers a glimpse into the vibrant atmosphere surrounding it. Passersby can be seen eagerly lining up outside, waiting with anticipation for their turn to experience the magic that awaited within those walls. Sadly, like many great establishments from that era, time eventually caught up with this cultural gem. The Argyle Picture House closed its doors in March 1960 and was ultimately demolished three years later to make way for progress - specifically Argyle Street Station. Although now only existing in memories and photographs such as this one by Daily Record's Memory Lane Prints collection, we are reminded through images like these how important places like cinemas were in shaping our collective history - providing joyous moments that have stood the test of time.
