The Nuns Olympics. Spike Milligan dressed as a Roman Catholic priest seen here
The Nuns Olympics. Spike Milligan dressed as a Roman Catholic priest seen here taking part in the hurdles.
They didn t have quite the organisation, perhaps, of the Munich Olympics. But the ecclesiastical games yesterday did have a spirit of their own. There were nuns, monks, rabbis, and vicars gathered in Chiswick to display their prowess for Spike Milligan, whose new BBC TV comedy series " A Milligan for all seasons" starts next week. There were hurdle races for the nuns (at least two of whom were fellers), pole vaults for priests... and an amazing- confessional relay, with each runner stopping to confess every 100 yards. Producer Roger Race, slightly bemused, said: " Spike told us to order a couple of dozen actors in clerical garb and this is the result." Spike himself turned out for the hurdles, dressed as a Roma n Catholic priest. Hoping to achieve immortality, presumably, as the Father of the Games. 4th September 1972

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the whimsical and unconventional "Nuns Olympics" a unique event that took place in Chiswick on September 4th, 1972. The ecclesiastical games brought together nuns, monks, rabbis, and vicars to showcase their athletic abilities for the amusement of Spike Milligan. Spike, who was dressed as a Roman Catholic priest himself, participated in the hurdles race with great enthusiasm. While lacking the grandeur and organization of the Munich Olympics held earlier that year, these games had an undeniable spirit of their own. The nuns competed in hurdle races (with at least two surprising male participants), while priests showcased their skills in pole vaulting. However, it was the confessional relay that truly stole the show - each runner would pause every 100 yards to confess their sins before continuing. The producer of Spike's new BBC TV comedy series "A Milligan for all seasons". Roger Race, admitted his slight bemusement at this eccentric gathering. He revealed that Spike had instructed them to gather actors dressed in clerical garb for this spectacle. In this particular image captured by Ron Burton from Memory Lane Prints, we see Spike Milligan leaping over a hurdle with remarkable agility and humorously clad as a Roman Catholic priest. Perhaps he aimed to achieve immortality as the Father of these unorthodox Games. This print serves as a delightful reminder of an extraordinary moment where laughter met athleticism within religious attire.
