Match That, trainees at Middlesbroughs Erimus Centre are set to send their latest
Match That, trainees at Middlesbroughs Erimus Centre are set to send their latest shipbuilding project sliding down the slipway. Its a canoe made entirely out of matchsticks and instructor supervisor John Arrowsmith reckons it will float like a dream. The canoe, which will be 6ft long when finished, is the second one built by trainees at the centre in Thorntree. Six trainees aged 16 to 65 are working on the current project and John estimates there are still a few months work to be done. The match firm Pioneer has donated 972, 000 matches specially imported from Sweden and a Tyne and Wear company is supplying free yacht varnish. Pictured are some of the trainees at work on the canoe, 26th August 1983

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print titled "Match That" trainees at Middlesbrough's Erimus Centre are on the verge of sending their extraordinary shipbuilding project down the slipway. What makes this project truly remarkable is that it is a canoe crafted entirely out of matchsticks, and instructor supervisor John Arrowsmith firmly believes it will glide effortlessly on water. Once completed, this magnificent creation will measure an impressive 6ft in length. This isn't the first time such ingenuity has been displayed by trainees at Thorntree's center. The current project involves six talented individuals ranging from ages 16 to 65, who have dedicated themselves to its construction. According to John, there still remains a few months' worth of meticulous work before their masterpiece can be unveiled. The success of this venture wouldn't have been possible without the generous contributions from Pioneer, a match company that donated an astonishing 972,000 matches imported all the way from Sweden. Additionally, a Tyne and Wear-based company has stepped forward to provide free yacht varnish for the finishing touches. Captured in this snapshot are some of these skilled trainees diligently working on their labor of love - a testament to their unwavering dedication and commitment towards achieving excellence. This photograph serves as a timeless reminder of not only their incredible craftsmanship but also highlights the spirit of collaboration between various associations and charities involved in supporting projects like these within Middlesbrough's vibrant community during the memorable year of 1983.
