EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the exhilarating atmosphere of The Tall Ships Race in Plymouth, England, back in 1970. The Norwegian windjammer steals the spotlight as its colossal sails gracefully catch the wind, propelling it forward. Leading the fleet out of Plymouth, this magnificent vessel named The Christian Radich weighs an impressive 773 tons and is among a record-breaking thirty-six ships participating in this year's race. The event was inaugurated by Prince Philip aboard The Royal yacht Britannia just a day prior to this snapshot being taken. Countries such as Britain, Norway, West Germany, Portugal, The Netherlands, France, and Italy proudly showcased their maritime prowess through their respective entries. Notably present was Sir Winston Churchill's three-masted schooner weighing 229 tons. However, stealing attention with its sheer size was the Norwegian barque Statstraad Lehmkuhl towering at a staggering 2,012 tons. Seventeen of these remarkable vessels embarked on a challenging journey spanning 1,450 miles all the way to The Canary Islands. Interestingly enough, The Christian Radich had also made appearances on screen during that era as one of James Onedin's ships in the popular BBC TV series "The Onedin Line". Moreover, it gained international recognition when featured in the widescreen movie Windjammer released in 1958. Launched in 1937 and boasting a crew of eighteen permanent members along with eighty-eight passengers onboard for this particular race; it is no wonder that Christian Radich remains an iconic name within sailing circles worldwide.
