EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Mr Alan Pegler, the savior of The Flying Scotsman Engine, diligently cleaning the window of the driver's cabin. In 1963, fueled by his childhood fascination with this magnificent locomotive, Pegler purchased it for a mere £3,000 to rescue it from an impending fate at the scrap yard. Driven by a deep desire to preserve its legacy for future generations, Pegler believed that engines should not be confined to museums like lifeless relics. He understood that their true allure lay in their resounding sounds and the intoxicating aroma of smoke and steam. His unwavering determination ensured that The Flying Scotsman would continue to captivate hearts long after its purchase. Designed by Sir Herbert Nigel Gresley, The Flying Scotsman is renowned as an express passenger train service connecting Edinburgh and London via the East Coast Main Line. Its storied history dates back to 1862 when it first embarked on its journey between Scotland's capital and England's bustling metropolis. It officially adopted its iconic name in 1924. On May 1st, 1928, this very locomotive made history by hauling an inaugural non-stop train from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh—a remarkable feat covering a staggering distance of 392 miles (631 km). At that time, such a seamless journey was unprecedented for scheduled services. This evocative picture was taken on Sunday May 9th, 1965—immortalizing Mr Alan Pegler's dedication towards preserving one of Britain's most cherished railway icons: The Flying Scotsman.
