EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic LNER poster from 1932, designed to promote London & North Eastern Railway's (LNER) docks and freight shipping services. Created by the talented artist Frank Mason, who had a deep connection with the sea due to his education at HMS Conway and experience sailing, this artwork beautifully captures the essence of marine and coastal subjects. The image portrays a mesmerizing view of The Tyne, highlighting its bustling harbors and ports. The composition is masterfully executed, drawing attention to the intricate details of smoke lighthouses that guide ships safely into these vibrant maritime destinations. Through this evocative piece, Mason not only promotes LNER's transportation services but also pays homage to his own involvement in engineering and shipbuilding in Leeds and Hartlepool. Displayed as a stunning print by NRM/Pictorial Collection at the National Railway Museum, this artwork transports viewers back in time to an era when railway posters were not just advertisements but works of art themselves.
