A storm approaches West Palm Beach, Florida from the East after hurricane Frances hit yesterday
A storm approaches West Palm Beach, Florida from the East after hurricane Frances hit yesterday. Severe thunderstorms have been hitting South Florida all day today, September 6, 2004. Frances hit Florida for a second time on Monday, weaker but still bearing torrential rains and high winds as it crossed from the Gulf of Mexico onto the northwestern Panhandle. A huge and slow-moving storm, Frances lumbered into the states east coast as a hurricane on Saturday and in two days cut power to more than 6 million people, disrupted telephone services, felled trees, damaged homes and smashed boats. State emergency management officials blamed three Florida deaths on Frances - a woman killed when a tree fell on her mobile home, a man killed when his car crashed on a rain-slick road and an 81-year-old man who suffered a fatal fall while walking his dog during the storm. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the ominous sight of a storm approaching West Palm Beach, Florida from the East, just one day after hurricane Frances wreaked havoc on the region. The aftermath of this powerful hurricane left South Florida battered by severe thunderstorms throughout September 6,2004. Although Frances had weakened upon its second landfall in Florida's northwestern Panhandle, it still brought torrential rains and strong winds that continued to cause destruction. The image showcases the sheer magnitude of this slow-moving storm as it looms over the state's east coast. In its wake, Frances left more than 6 million people without power and caused extensive damage to homes, trees, and boats. Tragically, three deaths were attributed to this devastating weather event - a woman who lost her life when a tree fell on her mobile home, a man involved in a fatal car crash on rain-slick roads, and an elderly gentleman who tragically fell while walking his dog during the storm. Photographer Marc Serota skillfully captured this momentous scene that serves as both a reminder of nature's raw power and resilience of those affected by such catastrophic events. This poignant image stands as a testament to the strength and determination exhibited by communities facing adversity head-on in their efforts to rebuild and recover from natural disasters like hurricane Frances.
