An endangered east African black rhino and her young one walk in Tanzanias Serengeti
An endangered east African black rhinoceros and her young one walk in Tanzanias Serengeti park, May 21, 2010, during the start of an initiative that will see 32 huge beasts flown to Tanzania from South Africa. An explosion in poaching in the 1960 and 70s saw the population of east African black rhinos in Tanzania plummet from over 1, 000 to just 70. Seven of the remaining rhinos were relocated to South Africa in an effort to protect them and bring the rhino sub-species back from the brink of extinction. Picture taken May 21, 2010. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, a heartwarming scene unfolds in Tanzania's Serengeti park as an endangered east African black rhino and her young offspring take a leisurely stroll. The image, captured on May 21,2010, marks the beginning of a groundbreaking initiative aimed at saving these magnificent creatures from extinction. Thirty-two of these colossal beasts are set to be transported from South Africa to Tanzania. Decades ago, rampant poaching ravaged the population of east African black rhinos in Tanzania, causing their numbers to plummet dramatically from over 1,000 to a mere 70 individuals. To protect and revive this vulnerable sub-species, seven remaining rhinos were relocated to South Africa. Now, with hope rekindled and conservation efforts underway, they return home. The photograph showcases not only the beauty but also the fragility of nature. It serves as a poignant reminder that wildlife preservation is crucial for maintaining biodiversity and safeguarding our planet's natural heritage. Against the backdrop of Tanzania's awe-inspiring landscape - part of its world-renowned national parks - this mother rhinoceros guides her curious young one through their habitat with strength and determination. Their presence symbolizes resilience in the face of adversity while highlighting humanity's responsibility towards protecting endangered species. This remarkable image captures an extraordinary moment between two majestic animals—a testament to both nature's wonders and mankind's commitment to reversing past mistakes by ensuring future generations can witness such breathtaking scenes firsthand.
