EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the early 1900s, capturing a picturesque view of Trevaunance Coombe with steamworks in the foreground below Wheal Friendly, St Agnes, Cornwall. The vantage point from above Peterville offers a unique perspective on this historic mining site. In the forefront of the image, we see a buddle - an ingenious contraption used for washing impurities from stamped tin. This particular buddle is just one example among various contrivances employed during that era; Bruntons frame, round buddle, Zenners rotating buddle were all part of the mining process. The photograph was taken by Arthur William Jordan and has since become an iconic representation of Cornish mine heritage. Its historical significance is further emphasized by its inclusion in Symons' Gazetteer of the County of Cornwall published in 1884. Interestingly enough, this remarkable image also found its way onto a postcard as part of A Jays Series collection. On April 1st, 1904, someone sent this postcard out into the world to share their awe-inspiring glimpse into Cornwall's rich mining history. As we admire this snapshot frozen in time at Royal Cornwall Museum today, let us appreciate not only its artistic value but also recognize it as a testament to our ancestors' industrious spirit and dedication to extracting precious resources from deep within Mother Earth's embrace.
