EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the charming town clock and Major Gills' car in Grampound, Cornwall, around 1925. The image was captured by Major Arthur William Gill, a renowned Cornishman and amateur photographer of his time. Major Gill was highly regarded for his presentations of stills and cine film to various esteemed groups such as The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, and the London Cornish Society during the 1920s and 1930s. The glass lantern slide from Major Gill's lecture titled "Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots" offers a glimpse into the vibrant history of this picturesque region. What sets these slides apart is that they were hand-painted by Major Gill himself with remarkable skill, bringing out vivid colors that enhance their visual impact. In this particular scene, we see an idyllic horse-drawn cart passing by the elegant town clock. The juxtaposition between tradition (the horse and cart) and modernity (Major Gills' car) captures a moment frozen in time. It transports us back to an era when life moved at a slower pace yet embraced progress. This print not only preserves a slice of Cornish heritage but also exemplifies Major Gill's talent as both an accomplished photographer and artist. His dedication to capturing historic beauty spots in color has left behind a lasting legacy that continues to captivate viewers today.
