Colliford Reservoir, St Neot, Cornwall. 1983

View of the newly constructed dam before the reservoir filled with water. The two people are thought be the photographer Charles Woolf and his wife, Phyllis. The reservoir on Bodmin Moor is an embankment construction, completed around the time this photograph was taken in 1983. The dam impounds water from the River St Neot. The reservoir supplies parts of North and South East Cornwall directly and also makes releases to the River Fowey which are treated at Restormel and distributed throughout much of Cornwall. The photograph was taken at the time of the archaeological excavation of the medieval tin works at Stuffle. Photographer: Charles Woolf / Joyce Greenham

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the serene beauty of Colliford Reservoir in St Neot, Cornwall, back in 1983. The image showcases the newly constructed dam before it was filled with water, offering a unique glimpse into its impressive engineering. Standing on the edge of this monumental structure are two figures believed to be renowned photographer Charles Woolf and his wife, Phyllis. Situated on Bodmin Moor, Colliford Reservoir is an embankment construction that was completed around the time this photograph was taken. Serving as a vital water source for North and South East Cornwall, it collects water from the River St Neot. Additionally, releases from this reservoir flow into the River Fowey and undergo treatment at Restormel before being distributed throughout much of Cornwall. The timing of this photograph coincided with an archaeological excavation taking place at nearby Stuffle, where medieval tin works were being explored. It adds another layer of historical significance to this already remarkable scene captured by Charles Woolf or Joyce Greenham. Cornish rural landscapes have always held a special allure for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike. This print not only showcases the natural splendor but also highlights the importance of civil engineering in harnessing resources sustainably.
