Poster Prints from Royal Cornwall Museum
Tolgarrick railway bridge, Truro, Cornwall. 1920s
Tolgarrick Bridge carried the branch line over the Falmouth Road to Newham goods yard alongside the river Fal. However, the railway was originally the West Cornwall Railway (WCR) line between Truro and Penzance. Truro station terminus being located at Newham for a few years, before the WCR was absorbed into the Great Western Railway (GWR) with their construction of the line from Plymouth to Truro which linked up with the WCR. This made the station terminus at Newham obsolete, but continued to function as a goods yard adjacent to Truro harbour. Photographer: Arthur William Jordan

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 1920s, capturing the historic Tolgarrick railway bridge in Truro, Cornwall. The bridge served as a vital link for the branch line over Falmouth Road to Newham goods yard alongside the picturesque river Fal. Originally part of the West Cornwall Railway (WCR) line between Truro and Penzance, this particular section became obsolete when the Great Western Railway (GWR) absorbed WCR. Truro station terminus was temporarily located at Newham before GWR constructed a new line from Plymouth to Truro that connected with WCR. Despite losing its role as a passenger terminal, Newham continued to function as an essential goods yard adjacent to Truro harbor. The photographer behind this remarkable image is Arthur William Jordan, whose keen eye captured not only the architectural beauty of Tolgarrick railway bridge but also its historical significance. This photograph serves as a testament to Cornwall's rich railway heritage and reminds us of how transportation infrastructure has evolved over time. Preserved by Royal Cornwall Museum, this print offers viewers a glimpse into an era when steam trains chugged along these tracks, carrying passengers and cargo through stunning Cornish landscapes. It stands as a tribute to both engineering marvels like Tolgarrick Bridge and those who worked tirelessly on our railways throughout history.
