Artists impression of the evolution of the sun
Artists impression of the evolution of the Sun. At bottom left, the new star is seen forming at the centre of a great, swirling cloud of gas. The central portion condenses, & pressure & heat build up until they ignite the burning of hydrogen by nuclear fusion. The star is born. The hydrogen is steadily fused into helium until, eventually, the hydrogen is exhausted & helium burning begins. At this stage, the outer layers of the star expand & it becomes cooler & redder.`The Sun will reach this stage in about 5000 million years. During its expansion, it will consume Mercury, Venus & Earth, & may extend as far as the orbit of Mars

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an artist's imaginative interpretation of the evolution of our beloved Sun. In the bottom left corner, we witness a mesmerizing spectacle as a new star takes shape within a magnificent swirling cloud of gas. As time progresses, the central portion begins to condense, leading to an increase in pressure and heat until finally igniting nuclear fusion by burning hydrogen. Thus, the birth of a star occurs before our eyes. Over countless eons, this newly formed star steadily fuses hydrogen into helium until it exhausts its hydrogen supply and transitions into helium burning. At this stage, remarkable transformations unfold as the outer layers expand while simultaneously cooling down and adopting a reddish hue. Remarkably, this awe-inspiring phenomenon is not merely confined to artistic imagination; it represents what our very own Sun will experience in approximately 5 billion years from now. During its expansion phase, it will engulf Mercury, Venus, Earth - perhaps even extending its reach towards Mars' orbit. As we gaze upon this artwork capturing the cosmic journey of our Sun through time and space, let us marvel at the intricate beauty that lies within nature's grand design. Science Photo Library has masterfully brought together science and artistry to provide us with an enlightening glimpse into one possible future for our celestial companion: The Sun.
