Atget crater, Mercury, MESSENGER image C016 / 9719

Atget crater on Mercury, MESSENGER image. North is at top. This crater, 100 kilometres across, is located in the Caloris Basin on Mercury, the planet closest to the Sun. This crater is in the northern hemispheres Liguria quadrangle. It has an interior and ejecta that are darker and bluer than the typical brown volcanic plains. The contrast aids estimates made of the thickness of the volcanic plains. The MESSENGER (Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry and Ranging) spacecraft entered orbit around Mercury in March 2011. Image obtained on 9 December 2012, by the Wide Angle Camera (WAC) of the Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the mesmerizing beauty of Atget crater on Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun. Located in the Caloris Basin and spanning an impressive 100 kilometers, this impact crater stands out with its unique features. The image, taken by NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft on December 9th, 2012, showcases a dark and blue interior and ejecta that contrasts against the typical brown volcanic plains found on Mercury's surface. The striking contrast of colors not only adds to the visual appeal but also aids scientists in estimating the thickness of these volcanic plains. As part of the Liguria quadrangle in Mercury's northern hemisphere, Atget crater provides valuable insights into planetary science and our understanding of impact craters within our solar system. Captured by MESSENGER's Wide Angle Camera (WAC) as part of its Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS), this satellite image offers a glimpse into one of nature's most awe-inspiring creations. The intricate details showcased in this photograph highlight both the ruggedness and delicacy present within planetary landscapes. As we admire this extraordinary image from space, let us appreciate NASA/Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory/Carnegie Institution of Washington for their tireless efforts in exploring our universe and bringing back such captivating visuals for all to enjoy.
