Computer artwork of ammonites (from Ernst Haeckel)

Ammonite shells. Computer-enhanced engraving of an assortment of ammonite species. Side and front views of the spiral shells are seen, each with many chambers. Ammonites are a type of extinct cephalopod mollusc that resembled a squid-like animal within a coiled shell. The many chambered shell protected the delicate organs of the mollusc, and was also used for buoyancy when some of the chambers were pumped full of air. Ammonites lived from the Devonian period (approximately 400 million years ago) to the end of the Cretaceous period (64 million years ago). Engraving taken from Ernst Haeckels famous treatise: " Art Forms of Nature" (1904)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of ammonites, as depicted through computer artwork inspired by Ernst Haeckel's renowned treatise "Art Forms of Nature". The image features a collection of ammonite species, with both side and front views revealing their mesmerizing spiral shells composed of numerous chambers. Ammonites were fascinating creatures that belonged to the extinct cephalopod mollusc family and bore a striking resemblance to squid-like animals residing within coiled shells. These many-chambered shells served a dual purpose for these ancient organisms. Firstly, they provided essential protection for the delicate organs housed within the molluscs' bodies. Additionally, some chambers could be filled with air, enabling buoyancy control in water. This ingenious adaptation allowed ammonites to navigate their marine environments effectively. Ammonites thrived from approximately 400 million years ago during the Devonian period until their extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period around 64 million years ago. Their existence spanned an impressive duration on Earth's timeline and left behind remarkable fossil records that continue to captivate paleontologists today. The engraving presented here is derived from Ernst Haeckel's influential work, which showcased nature's diverse forms in exquisite detail. By combining artistry with scientific accuracy, this computer-enhanced depiction offers viewers a glimpse into the fascinating world of these ancient invertebrates – highlighting their unique structures and contributing to our understanding of prehistoric life forms.
