Fairy Shrimp female C015 / 0882

Fairy Shrimp Chirocephalus diaphanus female. Fairy shrimps swim around on their backs, propelled by the constantly moving legs. Fossils of Fairy Shrimps have been found in Cambrian rocks in Sweden. The egg sac can be clearly seen. Fairy Shrimps lack a carapace, and are considered to be rather primitive as they have a relatively large number of segments and the legs are not specialised. The body is elongated, and bears 11 pairs of legs fringed with bristles; the head curves downwards, and in males the second pair of antennae are modified claspers for grabbing females during mating. They grow up to 25mm in length. They are the only Fairy Shrimp to be found in UK, this species inhabits temporary pools, ranging from ponds to muddy ruts, and shows a preference for sites that are subject to regular disturbance by vehicles, livestock, or ploughing

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the delicate beauty of a female Fairy Shrimp, known as Chirocephalus diaphanus. These enchanting creatures are truly unique, swimming gracefully on their backs with their legs in constant motion. Fossils of Fairy Shrimps have been discovered in Cambrian rocks in Sweden, revealing their ancient origins. In this image, the intricate details of the Fairy Shrimp's anatomy are clearly visible. Unlike other crustaceans, these primitive beings lack a carapace and possess a relatively large number of segments. Their elongated bodies bear 11 pairs of legs adorned with bristles that help them navigate through freshwater habitats. The female's egg sac is prominently displayed, showcasing her role in reproduction. Males have modified claspers on their second pair of antennae used to grasp females during mating rituals. Remarkably, this particular species is the only type of Fairy Shrimp found in the UK. They thrive in temporary pools such as ponds and muddy ruts that experience regular disturbances from vehicles or ploughing activities. Measuring up to 25mm long, these living fossils provide an intriguing glimpse into our planet's past while adapting to ever-changing environments. Sinclair Stammers' photograph beautifully encapsulates the essence and fragility of these ephemeral creatures within their natural habitat – a testament to both nature's resilience and its remarkable diversity.
