False-col SEM of Penicillium chrysogenum

False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Penicillium chrysogenum, the species of penicillin fungus from which the antibiotic is manufactured. The micrograph shows a close-up of the fungal spores, or conidia. The conidia are in fact green in colour, which is why mouldy cheese often looks green. The slightest movement of air causes the conidia to be detached & blown away. Penicillium species are the most widespread moulds, & the air is full of their conidia. It was the chance arrival of a spore of P. notatum on a bacterial plate that led to Alexander Flemings discovery of penicillin as an antibiotic. Magnification: x2850 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Penicillium chrysogenum, the remarkable species of penicillin fungus responsible for manufacturing the life-saving antibiotic. The image provides an up-close view of the fungal spores, known as conidia, which are surprisingly green in color. This explains why moldy cheese often exhibits a vibrant green hue. Interestingly, even the slightest movement of air can detach these conidia from their source and blow them away. Penicillium species are incredibly widespread molds that release their conidia into the air. In fact, our atmosphere is teeming with these microscopic particles. It was through sheer chance that Alexander Fleming's groundbreaking discovery of penicillin as an antibiotic occurred when a spore of P. notatum landed on a bacterial plate. The magnification level employed to capture this stunning image was an impressive x2850 at 35mm size, allowing us to appreciate the intricate details and beauty within nature's fungi kingdom. This photograph serves as a testament to the incredible world hidden from our naked eyes but brought to light by scientific exploration.
