False-colour TEM of a human hepatocyte

False colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a human hepatocyte, a liver cell. Hepatocytes function in the storage of glycogen (metabolized from excess glucose) and processing of lipid. Glycogen is represented by numerous pink bodies. A vacuole containing triglyceride appears yellow/green; mitochondria are coloured gold. In addition to the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats, other important liver functions include: detoxification of waste products; reclamation of spent red cells and synthesis & secretion of bile and blood clotting agents. Magnification: x9000 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world within a human hepatocyte, a liver cell. Through false-color transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we are granted a mesmerizing glimpse into the inner workings of this vital organ. The image is bursting with vibrant hues that highlight different cellular components and functions. The pink bodies scattered throughout represent glycogen, which is stored in hepatocytes after being metabolized from excess glucose. These energy reserves ensure the body has a readily available source of fuel when needed. A striking yellow/green vacuole containing triglyceride catches our attention, emphasizing the liver's role in processing lipids. The golden-colored mitochondria stand out prominently, underscoring their crucial function in generating energy for various cellular processes. Beyond metabolism, hepatocytes play an essential role in detoxifying waste products and reclaiming spent red blood cells. Furthermore, these remarkable cells synthesize and secrete bile—a critical component for digestion—and blood clotting agents necessary to prevent excessive bleeding. This TEM image offers us an up-close look at how all these intricate mechanisms coexist within a single hepatocyte. With its impressive magnification of x9000 at 35mm size, this photograph invites us to marvel at the complexity and beauty hidden within our own bodies—an awe-inspiring testament to the wonders of human anatomy captured by Science Photo Library.
