Flood defence model of Venice, Italy. Venice is a city on an island in a coastal lagoon. The two men are on the main island at the entrance to the Canale Grande (running to bottom left). Severe floods, due to winds and tides, are predicted to worsen due to global warming and subsidence. A variety of defences, part of the MOSE project, are tested on this model of the entire 550-square- kilometre lagoon.
