Francesco Sforza, military leader

Franscsco Sforza, military leader. Historical artwork of a rider on a rearing horse by the Italian artist, engineer and scientist Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). This sketch is a study for the Sforza monument, depicting Francesco Sforza who was Duke of Milan from 1450-1466. Sforza was an expert tactician and field commander. He modernized the city of Milan, which became a centre of Renaissance learning and culture. At the time of its commission the Sforza monument was to be the worlds largest statue. In 1473, da Vinci created a 7.2 metre high clay model of the monument, but this was destroyed before the bronze cast could be made

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a historical artwork by the renowned Italian artist, engineer, and scientist Leonardo da Vinci. The sketch depicts Francesco Sforza, an esteemed military leader and Duke of Milan from 1450 to 1466. Known for his expertise in tactics and field command, Sforza played a pivotal role in modernizing the city of Milan during the Renaissance era. Leonardo da Vinci's study for the Sforza monument is truly remarkable. This particular sketch captures a rider on a rearing horse with incredible detail and precision. It serves as an illustration of da Vinci's mastery in capturing movement and expression through art. The Sforza monument was intended to be the largest statue in the world at its time of commissioning. In fact, da Vinci even created an impressive clay model standing at a towering height of 7.2 meters (23 feet). Unfortunately, before it could be cast in bronze, this magnificent model was tragically destroyed. Through this monochrome image, we are transported back to the vibrant history of Italy during the 15th and 16th centuries. It not only reflects upon Francesco Sforza's significant contributions as a ruler but also highlights Leonardo da Vinci's artistic brilliance and his impact on both science and art. This print from Science Photo Library allows us to appreciate the rich legacy left behind by these remarkable figures who shaped history through their talents and achievements.
