German torpedo boat sailor. German sailor using a turret in a German torpedo boat during World War I. These craft ( Torpedoboot ) were designed to sink enemy vessels using torpedoes. They varied during this period from small coastal boats to large destroyer-type vessels. Over 300 torpedo boats were built by Germany during World War I. They were operated by the Hochseeflotte, the German High Seas Fleet, the battle fleet of the German Imperial Navy.
