Hermann Kolbe, German chemist C018 / 7110

Hermann Kolbe (1818-1884). 1889 engraving of the German organic chemist Adolf Wilhelm Hermann Kolbe. Kolbe was an inspirational teacher and a talented researcher. He achieved great success in devising chemical pathways for the synthesis of organic compounds. One of these, the Kolbe reaction, was named after him. In this reaction an organic acid is reacted with an alkali metal to produce a salt. Electrolysis of this salt will produce simple hydrocarbons from the original acid. Kolbe did, however, hold firm to outdated ideas. He also criticised new ideas, such as vigorously abusing Kekules (correct) theories on the structure of carbon compounds

EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving from 1889 showcases the renowned German chemist, Hermann Kolbe. Adolf Wilhelm Hermann Kolbe (1818-1884) was not only an accomplished researcher but also a highly influential teacher in the field of organic chemistry. His groundbreaking work led to the development of chemical pathways for synthesizing organic compounds, earning him great success and recognition. The engraving depicts Kolbe with a serious yet determined expression on his face, symbolizing his unwavering dedication to scientific exploration. As one of his notable contributions, he introduced the world to the Kolbe reaction – a process where an organic acid reacts with an alkali metal to produce a salt. By electrolyzing this salt, simple hydrocarbons can be obtained from the original acid. While Kolbe's achievements were remarkable, it is important to note that he held onto outdated ideas and staunchly criticized new concepts such as Kekule's theories on carbon compound structures. Nevertheless, his impact on the field of chemistry cannot be denied. This historical illustration provides us with a glimpse into the life and work of this brilliant scientist during the 19th century. The monochrome artwork against a white background adds depth and character to this portrait of Herrmann Kolbe – a man who left an indelible mark on organic chemistry through his innovative research and teachings.
