Penicillin fungus growing on cheddar cheese

Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) the fruiting bodies or conidia of a penicillin fungus growing on a piece of English cheddar cheese which has gone mouldy in the refrigerator. The fungus (Penicillium sp. ) grows as a mycelium of hyphal threads on and within the cheese, sending out branches or conidiophores, which bear from their tips the conidia (tuft-like clusters). The conidia resemble beads strung together in a chain. Once ripe, each bead can germinate into a new organism. Fungal colouring is determined by the conidioph- ore, which in penicillin is green. The mycelium is colourless. Magnification: X 185 at 35mm size, X 1300 at 8x10 inch size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of nature's smallest wonders. In this scanning electron micrograph, we are granted a close-up view of a penicillin fungus thriving on a piece of English cheddar cheese that has succumbed to mold in the refrigerator. The Penicillium sp. fungus manifests as a mycelium composed of delicate hyphal threads intricately woven both on and within the cheese. From these threads emerge branches known as conidiophores, which bear tuft-like clusters called conidia at their tips. These conidia resemble beads strung together in an enchanting chain formation. Each ripe bead possesses the remarkable ability to germinate into an entirely new organism, perpetuating the life cycle of this fungal marvel. The vibrant green hue exhibited by these conidiophores determines the overall coloring of this particular penicillin strain, while the mycelium remains colorless. Magnified at 185 times its original size for 35mm prints or an astounding 1300 times for larger formats like 8x10 inches, this monochrome image allows us to appreciate every minute detail with awe-inspiring clarity. Through this mesmerizing snapshot captured by Science Photo Library, we gain insight into the hidden world of fungi and witness firsthand how even something as seemingly ordinary as mold can possess extraordinary beauty when viewed through a different lens.
