Planet orbiting Barnards Star

Barnards Star planet. Computer artwork of a hypothetical planet in orbit around Barnards Star (lower left). Barnards Star is a red dwarf star in the constellation Ophiuchus. It lies just under six light years from Earth, making it one of the closest stars to us. This planet is so close to the faint, cool star that its orbit has become locked. This means that one side of the planet always faces the star and the other side always faces away from it. This causes a large temperature difference on the planet, and an extensive ice cap (white) is seen on its dark side

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing computer artwork of a hypothetical planet gracefully orbiting Barnards Star. Known as one of the closest stars to Earth, this red dwarf star resides in the constellation Ophiuchus, just under six light years away from us. The unique proximity between this celestial body and its neighboring planet has resulted in an extraordinary phenomenon known as orbital locking. As a consequence of this cosmic dance, one side of the planet is forever bathed in the warm glow of Barnards Star, while the other remains shrouded in eternal darkness. This stark contrast gives rise to a dramatic temperature difference across the planet's surface, leading to an awe-inspiring sight: an extensive ice cap adorning its darkened hemisphere. The intricate details captured by this illustration offer us a glimpse into an alien planetary system that challenges our understanding of cosmology and ignites our curiosity about extraterrestrial life. With its scientific significance and artistic allure, this image serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge beyond our own world. Science Photo Library presents yet another breathtaking snapshot from the vast realm of space exploration—a visual feast for astronomy enthusiasts and dreamers alike.
