Rescuers working in the aftermath of an e

Sakhalin earthquake. Workers use cranes to rescue survivors from collapsed buildings after the Sakhalin earthquake. Earthquakes are tremors caus- ed when sections of the earth move against each other to relieve stress. An earthquake with a strength of about 7.5 on the Richter scale struck the island of Sakhalin, off the eastern coast of Russia, on the night of 27-28 May 1995. Although the epicentre was about 135 kilometres off Sakhalins northern coast, it caused extensive damage. The town of Nevtegorsk (seen here) was hit worst, with only 875 inhabitants surviving from a population of 3, 200. The rescuers here work for the Russian Ministry for Emergency Situations

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures the heroic efforts of rescuers in the aftermath of the devastating Sakhalin earthquake. With cranes as their tools, these brave workers are tirelessly striving to save survivors trapped under collapsed buildings. The Sakhalin earthquake, measuring approximately 7.5 on the Richter scale, struck this Russian island off its eastern coast on the fateful night of 27-28 May 1995. Despite its epicenter being located about 135 kilometers away from Sakhalin's northern coast, the destructive force caused extensive damage throughout the region. Amongst all affected areas, Nevtegorsk suffered unimaginable devastation with only a mere fraction of its population surviving – a heartbreaking statistic that reveals the true magnitude of this natural disaster. In this photograph, we witness resilience and determination personified as these rescuers work under immense pressure to bring hope amidst chaos. They belong to none other than Russia's Ministry for Emergency Situations – an organization dedicated to safeguarding lives during times of crisis. Earthquakes like these occur when different sections of our planet shift against each other in order to alleviate stress build-up. This image serves as a stark reminder not only of nature's power but also humanity's unwavering commitment to saving lives even in dire circumstances. Captured by Science Photo Library and presented here without any commercial intent, let us reflect upon this poignant moment frozen in time - one that symbolizes both tragedy and resilience in equal measure.
