Soviet N-209 transpolar flight crew, before their fatal flight on 12th August 1937. They flew a modified DB-A aircraft (background) from Moscow over the Arctic towards Alaska. While over the Arctic, communications ceased. It is thought that the aeroplane crashed, though an extensive search failed to find any wreckage. The crew (left to right) are: Nikolai Galkovsky (radio operator), Nikolai Kastanayev (second pilot), Sigizmund Levanevsky (commander), Grigory Pobezhimov (flight engineer), Nikolai Godovikov (flight engineer) and Viktor Levchenko (pilot-navigator)

These brave explorers embarked on a daring mission, flying a modified DB-A aircraft from Moscow towards Alaska over the treacherous Arctic region. Tragically, all communication was lost while they were soaring above the icy landscapes. Speculations suggest that the plane met with an unfortunate crash, but despite extensive search efforts, no wreckage was ever found.
