Percuil ferry landing, Gerrans, Cornwall. 1901
A view looking up stream on Percuil (Porthcuel) River, of the ferry landing at Percuil (Porthcuel). In an age of horse drawn vehicles, this ferry landing would have given the people of Gerrans a faster and easier access to St Mawes, where another ferry could take them to Falmouth. The alternative would have meant a long road journey. The carvel built vessel in the middle of the picture has a funnel and steam engine which is covered by a tarpaulin. A number of people seem to be waiting for a ferry. In the background a four wheeled break and two wheeled trap type carriages stand awaiting their passengers. Photographer: Herbert Hughes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1901, offering a glimpse into the past at Percuil ferry landing in Gerrans, Cornwall. The image showcases a view looking up stream on the serene Percuil River, where locals would eagerly await their ferry to St Mawes. In an era dominated by horse-drawn vehicles, this efficient mode of transportation provided the people of Gerrans with faster and easier access to their desired destination. The focal point of the photograph is a remarkable carvel built vessel positioned in the middle. Its distinct features include a funnel and steam engine discreetly concealed under a protective tarpaulin. This technological marvel must have been quite impressive for its time, symbolizing progress amidst traditional surroundings. As we explore further into this snapshot from history, we notice several individuals patiently waiting for their turn to board the ferry. Their anticipation is palpable as they stand alongside two types of carriages: four-wheeled breaks and two-wheeled trap carriages. These modes of transport serve as reminders that life was vastly different over a century ago. Photographer Herbert Hughes skillfully captures not only an ordinary moment at Percuil ferry landing but also provides us with valuable insights into daily life during Victorian and Edwardian times in Cornwall. This evocative image transports us back to an era when rivers were highways and steam-powered vessels revolutionized travel possibilities for local communities like Gerrans.
