EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Basset Memorial, a magnificent granite monument standing tall at 90 feet in Carn Brea, Illogan, Cornwall. Taken in the early 1900s and part of the esteemed A. K. Hamilton Jenkin collection, this image transports us back to a time when history and nature converged. The memorial was erected in 1836 as a tribute to Francis Basset of Tehidy, an extraordinary individual who received his peerage as Baron de Dunstanville for his heroic actions during the French and Spanish Armada of 1779. In recognition of his bravery, he led his miners from Cornwall all the way to Plymouth to fortify marine defenses against potential invasions. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are reminded not only of the monumental structure itself but also its surroundings. The rugged hills and tors that dominate the landscape speak volumes about Cornwall's rich geology and mining heritage. This region has long been renowned for its ancient sites and archaeological wonders. While the photographer remains unknown, their skillful composition captures both the grandeur of the memorial and its harmonious integration with nature. With every glance at this remarkable print from Royal Cornwall Museum's archives, we are transported back in time to witness a momentous chapter in Cornish history - one where courage met determination amidst stunning geological formations.
